Though lacking the lushness of Emezi’s best fiction, these poems urgently communicate a relatable search for identity and safety and will resonate with a wide range of readers wanting to undertake that search, too. Especially important in presenting another dimension of this gifted writer.
Emezi’s (The Death of Vivek Oji) latest work is sexy, complex, and moving. The author illustrates the complexities of grief, new love, and a young woman discovering who she is and who she wants to be, and readers will enjoy a new take on a love triangle romance.
The plaudits for Emezi’s first novel, Freshwater (NYPL Young Lions, Lambda Literary, and Center for Fiction’s First Novel honors), did not overstate the case. Following Pet, a finalist for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, this achingly beautiful probe into the challenges of living fully as a nonbinary human being, is an illuminating read.
Discerning patrons seeking outstanding world literature will demand access to Freshwater. ["A gorgeous, unsettling look into the human psyche, richly conceived yet accessible to all": LJ 11/15/17 starred review of the Grove hc.]
