This stand-alone romantic suspense is Haas’s first under the Harlequin imprint. CEO Samantha Gates has created the latest popular dating app, leaving her past behind her—at least, she thought she had. But then Detective Max Green shows up in her office, wanting to know why dead women—women who have all recently gone on dates through her online site—are being dumped in places that have particular significance to Sam. It soon becomes clear that the killer has set their sights on Samantha. Though she was initially hesitant to help Max with his investigation, keeping her history safely in the past is a luxury she can no longer afford. This one’s a page-turner, even though some aspects of it require significant suspension of belief. The romance veers toward instalove as the lines are blurred between the detective and the civilian who quickly goes from a person of interest to a love interest—not out of the ordinary for the genre, but there’s also not quite enough of a foundation here to sustain it.
VERDICT For readers looking for a quick escape, this one offers standard fare.
