Infamous for his mother’s murder of his uncle and a sister locked away in an asylum, Lord Henry Northcott, otherwise known as the brooding baron, promises to look after his friend’s sister, Arabella Latham, while his friend is away from London. Arabella can see that Henry has secrets weighing on him, so she tries to engage him in her lively antics and conversation to better understand him. Henry enjoys spending time with Arabella, but he is reticent to get too close, as he does not want to inflict his family’s controversies on her. Also conspiring against them is Henry’s aunt, who controls Henry by using the guilt he feels for his mother’s crime. Henry will need to confront the past before he can start living, and Arabella may be the only one he’s willing to trust enough to do so.
VERDICT Flint’s (Games in a Ballroom) slow-burn romance focuses on many mental health issues related to Henry and his family, while Arabella is a major support to him. Readers may still be troubled by Henry’s assumptions and inaction regarding his sister’s well-being for much of the story.
