Despite a slow start, the fifth "Halflife Chronicles" novel (after Dead Easy) quickly turns into a fast-paced read packed with adventure, mystery, and its fair share of sarcasm. Good for teen and adult fans of Jim Butcher and those looking for a new take on sf/fantasy.
Simmons's (One More Day) cleverly dark family whodunit, narrated from multiple points of view, is just the perfect read for a day at the beach. The wonderful, salty Nantucket atmosphere and a cast of entertainingly questionable characters populate a fast-moving and spare plot.
Though tragic, Pecan's story is also one of strength and courage that will move readers. Simmons's Gold Medal for Multicultural Fiction from the Independent Publisher Book Awards is earned in this harrowing and gripping tale. [See "A Good Beginning," ow.ly/T4dA304qLIi.]
Simmons presents a rare and fascinating look at the tourist's North Korea in a work that is humorous, appalling, and very sad. A highly recommended and revealing glimpse into a secretive land.
