Small Mercies

After almost six years since his last novel, Since We Fell, Lehane’s (Mystic River; Shutter Island) latest is inspired by a childhood experience when his family was caught up in the violence of the anti-busing riots. Pair this powerful, unforgettable story with S.A. Cosby’s Razorblade Tears, another remarkable novel about racism, violence, and parental vengeance.

World Gone By

Expect high demand for this title, no matter the BISAC classification. Fans of Lehane and of his historical series will line up to read the finale, as will those who enjoy Mafia and organized crime stories. A movie version of Live by Night (directed by and starring Ben Affleck) is in the works, which should provoke even more interest in the series. [See Prepub Alert, 7/7/14.]

Moonlight Mile

Longtime readers will appreciate how Lehane's protagonists have believably aged. Fatherhood has mellowed Patrick, but he's not above inflicting a little pain with the help of sidekick Bubba. Temporarily a stay-at-home mom, Angie misses the hard-edged excitement of her old life. A few false notes involve some cartoonish Russian villains, but the resolution, while sad to series fans, makes perfect sense. [See Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/10.]
