Kent's (The Crooked House) psychological thriller is reminiscent of B.A. Paris's Behind Closed Doors, which is a more exciting example of stories in this subgenre (a wife realizes she doesn't actually know the man she married). Readers who enjoy Fiona Barton and Shari Lapena may want to try this title.
British author Kent has crafted an appealing detective series (after A Murder in Tuscany and The Drowning River) with strong atmospheric elements, a dash of romance, and plenty of creepy situations to set the suspense-o-meter on high. The ending might seem a bit contrived, but it’s guaranteed to please those who like the loose ends tied up. Recommend highly to readers who miss Magdalen Nabb’s and Michael Dibdin’s works.
Filling her mystery debut with plenty of action, fast-thinking people, and beautiful Florence, British novelist Kent (Late Season) keeps the reader guessing how it all fits together. Donna Leon readers will like. [Minotaur First Edition Selection; library marketing campaign.]
