Natt och Dag’s follow-up to
The Wolf and the Watchman follows 15-year-old Eric Three Roses, the second son of a wealthy landowner in 1794 Stockholm. Eric falls in love with Linnea Colling, the daughter of one of his father’s tenants. He wishes to marry her, but his father is opposed and instead sends Eric to Saint Barthelemy, a Swedish colony in the Caribbean, until he comes of age. While there, he encounters tragedy and deceit, eventually returning to Sweden to marry. Eric’s joy at marrying Linnea is short-lived, as he awakes on his wedding night to find that Linnea has been murdered. Eric is devastated, thinking he must have killed his new wife but having no memories of what happened. Linnea’s mother seeks out investigator Jean Mickel Cardell to delve into the details of that ghastly night. Natt och Dag’s complex story is narrated by Clara Andersson, Matt Addis, and Richard Pearce. While they offer fluid, well-paced performances and well-rounded, nuanced characterizations, listeners may be taken aback by occasional Cockney accents, which feel out of place.
VERDICT Natt och Dag’s latest is Shakespearean in scope. A tragic and chilling tale that should appeal to fans of historical mysteries and Scandi noir.
