Veterinarian Kate Turner and her assistant are making house calls on a winter day when they are flagged down on a country road in the Hudson River Valley. A passerby has found a body in the woods. As Kate investigates the scene, another body is found. Everyone’s first thought is murder-suicide, but Kate hears through the grapevine that the police now think it was a double murder. When Kate later finds the body of one of her staffers, dead of an overdose in the exam room, the mystery gets even more complex. Determined to figure out what is going on, she sets out to find a connection among the three people—and maybe find out more about that cute large-animal vet from the next town over. Kate has to juggle her amateur sleuthing with her busy vet practice, including treating a wild crow, to discover the motive and the murderer before time runs out.
VERDICT This follow-up to Last but Not Leashed is for those who enjoy small-town mysteries and engaging animal characters.
