Smith offers a thoroughly enjoyable second entry in her “My Spy” series, following
The Spy and I. Fireworks designer Andee Paxton has always been told that her biological father is a celebrity actor. However, when she takes a DNA test, she discovers that her real father is Holt, a dangerous international arms dealer who has Andee in his crosshairs. The CIA hopes to use Andee as bait to catch Holt and brings in dashing Officer Adam Chan to help with the case. But before they can set up their operation, Andee and Chan are kidnapped, forcing them to enact a fake relationship as cover. The two must work together, using their wits to outsmart Andee’s father, who is determined to make her construct a deadly chemical weapon. Relative newcomer Alex Finke narrates, skillfully voicing resourceful Andee and Chan, whose hearing loss gives the couple an unexpected advantage. Finke’s performance is nuanced yet emotionally charged, capturing the flirtiness and fun of this high-octane romance.
VERDICT An unputdownable forced-proximity romance, full of intrigue, adventure, and chemistry.
