Price (
The Whites, as Harry Brandt) explores the aftermath of a terrible accident, when a five-story apartment building collapses in Harlem in 2008. Drawn into the disaster’s orbit are police detective Mary Roe, photographer Felix Pearl, funeral home director Royal Davis, and Anthony Carter, an unemployed teacher recovering from substance-use disorder. As the community rallies together to pick up the pieces, people previously unknown to one another and absorbed in their own life struggles become inextricably linked. Mary tirelessly investigates the collapse; Felix documents the aftermath and those impacted; Royal buries the deceased; and Anthony, who is pulled from the rubble days after the collapse, struggles to find his purpose. Throughout the novel, each character learns more about themselves and discovers what is truly important to them. Robb Moreira narrates, skillfully giving each character their own unique voice. Unfortunately, however, the audio occasionally feels jarring and confusing, as the segues between characters are not clearly defined.
VERDICT An affecting portrait of urban life. While the audio requires close listening, it will resonate with those seeking literary fiction about community, purpose, and meaning.
