Narrator Cassandra Campbell returns for the third installment of the “Shady Hollow Mystery” series from Black (
Cold Clay). Shady Hollow, a small town in a Beatrix Potteresque world, has yet another mystery in need of solving. Dorothy Springfield is sure her husband Edward has been murdered—despite him standing in front of her and other inhabitants of their sleepy little burgh. Feeling that there is more to the story than Dorothy’s mistaken beliefs, intrepid reporter Vera Vixen can’t help but investigate. Using her reporter’s nose, she sniffs out the clues surrounding the case. With a vast catalogue of audiobook narrations, it’s no surprise that Campbell gives a near perfect performance of this novel with her soft-spoken tone. While some might consider the production to sound juvenile, it makes sense when the anthropomorphic animal characters are taken into account. Campbell has the ability to give each creature a voice befitting both their personalities and their species, providing another layer of entertainment to the story and keeping the listener engaged in the tale.
VERDICT A true delight, especially for those who enjoy cozy mysteries.
