OrangeReviewStarRay Nelson is a misfit and a loner, still living in the old run-down apartment he once occupied with his family. In order to support himself, he uses his freakish size and strength to challenge others in illegal fight clubs, able to take on the toughest opponents with ease. However, with his mother dead, his father on the run, and his sister lost to drugs, Ray has little other contact with the outside world. The one exception is Natalie. A teenager living in the building, she has become Ray's friend, confidante, and student after he took her under his wing with the intent of teaching her to protect herself, especially with a white van canvassing the neighborhood and one young girl already missing. Natalie proves to be a quick study, but Ray worries that he won't be able to shield her if the worst happens, and it might be at the hands of someone in his own family.
VERDICT Thomas (Disintegration) has written an immensely readable thriller with an unlikely hero that will have readers eagerly turning the pages to find out what happens next. Highly recommended.
