Xavier Reynolds was relieved to have escaped his small hometown of Harper’s Cove, ME. After losing both his boyfriend and a coveted fellowship, however, he reluctantly returns home. Desperate for work, he lands a job as a cook at The Wharf, a swanky new restaurant opened by single-father, Logan O’Hare. What could be a recipe for disaster soon turns into a sizzling romance. Jackson’s (I’m So (Not) Over You) latest romance is a delicious listen, both for the romance and the description of the many delectable entrées served up throughout. Listeners will appreciate Jackson’s nuanced treatment of sexuality and race (Xavier is Black and gay, while Logan is white and bi) in this fun and sexy romance. Narrator Joshua David Scarlett expertly communicates the tension between the two men and ably portrays the differences in their personalities. Regrettably, Scarlett’s women characters are delivered with unpleasant stereotypical voices that are occasionally overbearing.
VERDICT Despite the mismatch in women’s voices, this smart romance should be a good addition to any romance collection. Suggest to fans of Alexis Hall or Casey McQuiston.
