Fast Scans | Top Foreign & Indie Picks, Including a Faithful Adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 'Jude the Obscure'

LJ's film columnist picks the month's top indie and foreign films, now available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Electra Glide in Blue. 106 min. Kino Lorber. 1973. Blu-ray UPC 738329259716. $29.99. Rated: PG. DRAMA

A motorcycle cop (Robert Blake) patrolling a desolate stretch of desert highway in Arizona’s Monument Valley aspires to more than writing speeding tickets. He gets his chance when he’s promoted for exposing an apparent suicide as a murder. Music producer-cum-director James William Guerico’s beautifully photographed, character-driven drama combines John Ford’s Western-genre mythos with the antiestablishment perspective of Easy Rider. VERDICT Fans of 1970s-era films should give this cult classic a try for its thoughtful exploration of disillusionment.

Jude. 123 min. Scorpion Releasing, dist. by Kino Lorber. 1996. Blu-ray UPC 738329258696. $29.99. Rated: R. DRAMA

In late-19th-century England, Jude (Christopher Eccleston), an unhappily wed rural laborer longing to be an academic, leaves for the university in Christminster, where he embarks on a turbulent affair with his freethinking, married cousin (Kate Winslet). But society disapproves and tragedy ensues in Michael Winterbottom’s faithful adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s heartrending 1895 novel Jude the Obscure. VERDICT Of the top-ranked film versions of Hardy novels, including Tess and Far from the Madding Crowd, this one cuts the deepest. Literary as well as film fans will revel.

Nathalie. 100 min. In French w/English subtitles. Cohen Media Group. 2003. Blu-ray UPC 738329259327. $29.99. DRAMA

Learning that her husband (Gérard Depardieu) has been unfaithful, happily married Catherine (Fanny Ardant) employs an upscale escort (Emmanuelle Béart) to strike up an affair with him and report back to her on the particulars. Despite a “surprise” twist that knowing viewers will see coming, director Anne Fontaine’s candid film offers an intriguing look into the buried desires of its disparate characters thanks to a top-notch cast. VERDICT Respectably remade as Chloe (2009) with Julianne Moore, Amanda Seyfried, and Liam Neeson; both versions should entice viewers.

Nitram. 112 min. IFC. 2021. DVD UPC 014381148053. $18.99; Blu-ray UPC 014381148060. $20.99. THRILLER

An intellectually challenged and behaviorally troubled young adult, Nitram (Caleb Landry Jones) proves to be more than a handful for his parents (Anthony LaPaglia and Judy Davis), particularly after he moves in with a former actress and heiress (Essie Davis) who indulges him except for allowing firearms. Based on the story of Australia’s infamous Martin Bryant, a mass murderer whose 1996 massacre of 35 people caused lawmakers to overhaul gun laws in Australia. VERDICT Director Justin Kurzel mercifully keeps the violence off-screen in this chilling psychological drama filled with mounting dread. For hardy viewers.

Pleasure. 109 min. Decal-Neon. 2021. Blu-ray UPC 843501038703. $22.99. DRAMA

Emigrating from Sweden, 19-year-old Linnéa (Sofia Kappel) adopts the name “Bella Cherry,” intending to become an adult-film star. Rising fast in the fickle porn industry by breaking her own rules on the extreme scenes she is willing to shoot, Bella compromises herself in a dubious quest for fame. Writer director Ninja Thyberg amazes in her feature-film debut, realistically depicting a rough milieu minus the hardcore shots. VERDICT Released unrated, this unsparing drama easily qualifies for an “NC-17”; best suited for adventurous collections.
