Will They or Won’t They

Kristen DiMercurio and Jay Aaseng narrate Wilder’s (How To Fake It in Hollywood) second-chance, enemies-to-lovers romance set under the bright lights of Hollywood. Lilah and Shane’s spark is instant—and strong enough to land them leading roles on a paranormal TV series. Soon the two are secretly sleeping together, but they can barely stand to be around each other when the relationship implodes. Lilah leaves the show when her contract is up, only returning for the show’s final season, at which point the duo must reconcile their past relationship before their animosity tears the production apart. DiMercurio offers an expressive, entertaining performance of Lilah’s point of view. She seamlessly differentiates among secondary characters, providing them with voices that reflect their personalities. Her rendition of Shane’s Oklahoman drawl and seemingly affable demeanor further engages. For his part, Aaseng ably captures Shane’s internal struggle with his future and keeps the story moving with nimble pacing. However, his women’s voices are a weak spot, especially when compared to DiMercurio’s range.
VERDICT Though an agreeable production, the somewhat uneven performances make this a secondary purchase for most collections.
