The first book in a new series by Blacke (“Brooklyn Murder Mysteries” series) follows Juniper “Juni” Jessup as she moves back to her hometown of Cedar River, TX, to open a record and coffee shop with her sisters Tansy and Maggie. The opening night party for Sip & Spin is a success, until Juni discovers a dead body in the supply closet. The Jessup sisters’ unreliable uncle is arrested as a suspect in the murder. Even worse, after the sisters use Sip & Spin as collateral for Uncle Calvin’s bail, he skips town. Growing frustrated with the lack of help from local police, the Jessup sisters decide to investigate on their own to save their uncle and their store. Cozy enthusiasts will find a lot to love in this title, including Daffy, the record store cat, a close-knit community, and plenty of amateur detective work. Readers will also enjoy getting to know the Jessup sisters, especially Juni, and the developed cast of supporting characters in Cedar River. The many music-related puns and the family high jinks add humor to the story.
VERDICT Will appeal to cozy mystery readers, fans of family-centered small-town mysteries, and music lovers.
