A broken family must put aside their differences when tragedy strikes in Bell’s latest (following She’s Gone). Anna Rogers goes out of her way to avoid her family. She feels embarrassed by her father, a retired cop, and shunned by the rest, who treat her like a pariah. Her half-sister Avery left the police force under difficult circumstances and now works security on a college campus. When Anna disappears and her roommate is murdered, Avery leaves everything behind to find her sibling. There is more at stake than everyone realizes, as Anna runs from a stalker and the family she doesn’t trust. Avery has to overcome a maze of secrets to obtain the answers she seeks, but she soon learns that they should have remained hidden. Bell delivers a perfect beach read with compelling characters and baffling circumstances. Some story elements are easy to decipher, but even the savviest suspense readers will be shocked by the final pages.
VERDICT Bell is truly at the top of his game with this psychological thriller. Fans of Lisa Gardner and Mary Kubica will want to add this to the top of their reading pile.
