Midwestern writer Mejia (Everything You Want Me To Be) begins a new series with a mystery centered around the disappearance of Eve’s husband, Matthew, a University of Iowa chemistry professor whose car is found burning in the rain. Eve, an atmospheric physicist, is initially reluctant to accept the help of Jonah, a mystery-solving psychic, but the two are a formidable pair, teaming up to search for Matthew during a week of bad weather. Eve and Matthew had been in couple’s therapy because he was caught having an inappropriate relationship with a student; during the course of her search for Matthew, Eve discovers that her husband has been hiding much more from her. Experienced Recorded Books narrators Brian Hutchison and Libby McKnight are joined by newcomer Alex Pineda to voice Eva, Jonah, and police detective Max, who has just returned to the force after being shot on the job and also happens to be Jonah’s childhood friend. Listeners will likely appreciate the clearly marked chapter headings. At the same time, some may note production differences between the chapters, especially in those where breaths are audible.
VERDICT Recommend to readers of fast-paced domestic thrillers.
