Wright (St. Paul and the Faithfulness of God) has made a substantial career from his study of Saint Paul the Apostle (c. 5–67 CE). This brief book is Wright's response to five of the most frequently found objections and criticisms to the arguments within his magnum opus. They are a kind of riposte to Wright's critics and a remarkable rarity in modern publishing: an author's apologia after the fact. Objections center on the nature of Paul's career and his role as Messiah, his apocalypticism or lack thereof, his view of Judaism, and his knowledge of Jesus. Wright's work is always interesting, but like many deeply versed in a subject, he offers responses that are difficult to comprehend.
VERDICT An interesting and provocative if ultimately unsatisfying addendum to Wright's already vast work, suitable for academic libraries.
