With her sophomore novel, Faulkner (Greenwich Park) proves that she is in her element writing slow-burn domestic thrillers. This gripping novel follows Tash, a freelance journalist in London who is digging into the mysterious death of a local nanny, with hopes that the story will revitalize her career. Meanwhile, she and her son join a local playgroup of posh moms, and shortly after, another woman with ties to the playgroup is found dead. Now Tash will grapple with trying to fit into this exclusive group of women while also investigating them. Soon enough, the line between friends and suspects begins to blur. Narrator Louise Brealey skillfully details new developments in Tash’s investigation, while London-based narrator Dakota Blue Richards reveals the truth through flashbacks in the first-person perspective of the first murder victim. The narrators offer seamless performances, using different British accents and slang. The psychological twists and turns will have listeners guessing and gasping simultaneously.
VERDICT An excellent addition to any mystery/thriller collection and a great recommendation for listeners seeking a gripping and increasingly claustrophobic story set among the polished elite.
