Homicide head Lennart Brix requests disgraced ex-police detective Sarah Lund's assistance when a female lawyer is discovered brutally slaughtered in a military graveyard. Lund reluctantly returns to Copenhagen to investigate after having spent two years working for border patrol in northern Denmark. When more bodies are found, Lund is the only person to see a connection with a recent wartime mission in Afghanistan that was clandestinely sanctioned by high-ranking government officials. In addition, an antiterrorism bill being pushed through the Danish parliament has direct ties to the probe.
VERDICT Hewson's (The Killing; Death in Seville) adaptation of the second season of the hit Scandinavian TV series The Killing disappoints with its awkward prose, odd word choices, and slow pace. Moreover, the characters' lack of depth and the description of Copenhagen that is typical to many Scandinavian crime novels fail to do the city justice. Still, fans of Stieg Larsson's and Henning Mankell's social commentary will appreciate Hewson's critique on terror and immigration in a Scandinavian country.
