The Locksley family, after their children’s kidnapping four years ago, led a quiet life until the death of King John. Now young King Henry III is on the throne, and the Locksleys leave Sherwood to attend the coronation. They also wait to see if the son will hold the same animosity for Robin as his father. Robin hopes that son John can somehow find favor with the king, possibly even to become a friend. The eldest daughter, Mary, still waits to see if she will finally meet her intended, William de Ros. The gathering gives cause for old foes to meet up and discover that some wounds have not healed. Yet when a surprise night outing reveals a plot and puts King Henry III in danger, May, John, and younger sister Eleanor once again prove they are the heirs of Robin Hood and Maid Marian.
VERDICT The follow up to Vaughn’s Ghosts of Sherwood enlivens the later years of Robin Hood, showcasing a richly conceived piece of historical fiction/fantasy with snappy dialog and fast-paced action.
