Carmen’s atmospheric debut follows two women whose lives converge on Block Island, just off the coast of Rhode Island. Blake Bronson arrives on the island, looking for her birth mother. Blake takes a room at White Hall, a Victorian mansion now serving as a B&B. There she meets Martin, a charmer who steers her efforts to find her mother. One stormy night, Blake sees the ghost of the original owner of White Hall, who warns her to leave. Blake is later found dead, apparently by suicide. Meanwhile, Boston attorney Thalia Mills, long estranged from her mother and Block Island, where she grew up, receives a letter from Blake, who claims to be her sister. Thalia heads for the island to discover more, unraveling a string of evils that culminate in a midnight struggle at the edge of a cliff. Narrator Linda Jones supplies an appropriately melodramatic performance, ably communicating the hallmarks of this gothic mystery—a remote island setting, a haunted house, murderous ghosts, hidden passageways, skeletons, and unsettling stormy weather.
VERDICT Thrilling psychological suspense that should appeal to fans of gothic novels and the works of Gemma Amor, Sarah Waters, and the Brontë sisters.
