In this continuation of his 2011 documentary
The Captains, Shatner combines leftover footage with additional material to create a five-part miniseries, with each episode focusing on an actor who played a captain in the
Star Trek franchise. Narrator/interviewer Shatner and the actors discuss their backgrounds, their respective paths to the captain's chair, and the aftermath. Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard,
The Next Generation) is candid about the personal toll on his career; Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway,
Voyager) is forthright about her love of theater and the difficulty of balancing single motherhood with shooting a TV series; Avery Brooks (Captain Sisko,
Deep Space Nine) proves that gravitas is no guarantee against nebulousness; Scott Bakula (Captain Archer,
Enterprise) comes off as the swell fellow he appears to be; and Chris Pine (Captain Kirk in the new Trek reboot) shares a segment with the self-promoting Shatner. Extras include additional interview footage.
VERDICT With some mature subject matter, but suitable for most audiences, this glorified set of bonus features is an acceptable purchase for general AV collections but a must-have for Trekkies.
