The Basilisk Throne

Keyes (“Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone” series) offers a tale of high fantasy on the high seas, over which the nonhuman Drehu empire has used its firepower and superior ships to ensure its dominance. Finally, the three human empires of Ophion, Velesa, and Modjal are ready to join forces, ending the war and the Drehu threat. Admiral Alastor Nevelon and his son Crespin set sail with a navy behind them for one final assault against the Drehu, while Alastor’s daughter Chrysanthe is sent to the capital to uncover a plot that might undermine their efforts. Meanwhile, an ancient sorcerer has his part to play in this drama, along with an enslaved girl and a young man with no allegiance. Though the tale’s many plotlines and massive cast of characters can be difficult to follow, John Skelley’s breathless narration propels the story forward from one naval battle to the next. Listeners will likely appreciate both the exhilarating action and the subtle behind-the-scenes intrigue.
