Travis Devine rides the 6:20 a.m. train into Manhattan every morning, reluctantly pursuing a grueling career in high finance after leaving his position as a U.S. Army Ranger. When a successful colleague and former girlfriend is found hanged in a supply closet, he becomes a suspect in her murder. Then, under pressure from a former Army general, he is coerced into acting as a spy to find out what extracurricular activities his firm is involved in and how that ties to the murder. The scheme Travis uncovers involves business leaders and politicians at the highest levels. Baldacci (A Gambling Man), well known for his intricate plots, does not disappoint, keeping the stakes high with numerous suspects and red herrings as the body count increases. Narrators Zachary Webber, Mela Lee, and Christine Larkin combine their voices, delivering a well-paced and exciting reading. The narrators’ characterizations are adept, allowing listeners to fully experience the varied personalities that populate this book.
