Suzanne Davis, a single woman in her mid-30s living in New York City, finds herself at the mercy of her biological clock as she decides to get serious about starting a family. The first step is to find a husband, and her strategy begins with observing those who have had success with the marriage and baby quest. So Suzanne starts frequenting her local playground and researching the mothers there. As she infiltrates their ranks, she's soon invited to join their book club, where potential suitors have been selected for her. The first of many missteps in her journey ensues, but Suzanne's biggest obstacle is still to come in the form of a life-threatening illness that may derail more than her desire to procreate. To make matters worse, her narcissistic and overly critical mother soon shows up to help with her treatment. In her attempt to get a life, Suzanne may end up losing the life she found lacking—or she may learn to appreciate it for all it is.
VERDICT This clever and well-written novel will enchant readers who enjoyed the author's Jane Austen-inspired fiction (Jane Austen in Scarsdale) and those who savor women's fiction that explores overcoming adversity.
