"Cougar Killing" screams the headlines, after state prosecutor Carly Simms is found in bed next to the corpse of the much younger Jon Cecil Hughes. Sheriff Jane Morgan calls on former cop John Bekker for help, believing that Simms has been framed. Intrigued by the victim's bio—it turns out Hughes grew up in a Catholic orphanage in Utah—Bekker interviews Hughes's coworkers and friends. Something doesn't smell right here, especially when he learns that other young males—scattered across the country and from the same orphanage—have recently died in unusual ways. Meanwhile, Bekker uses his underworld connections to get the best possible legal counsel for Simms. Bekker's own dark past colors his actions, and his family isn't thrilled by his thirst for justice.
VERDICT This thriller sequel (after the Edgar-nominated Sunset) moves at a blistering pace right from the start. Lamanda's brusque paladinlike protagonist is just the guy for readers who like a damaged hero struggling with family concerns.
