At the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), Miss Pearl has been the Alpha Delta Beta housekeeper for 25 years and is like a second mother and unofficial therapist to all 430 sorority sisters. The Alpha Delt House is gearing up for another year of rush and with Lilith Whitmore, a former sorority sister and the new house corp president at the helm, everyone is a little tense. Another alum and former Alpha Delt, Wilda Woodcock, is called on by Lilith to fill her open spot on the rush advisor board. Plus, Lilith's and Wilda's daughters, Annie Laurie and Ellie, will both be attending Ole Miss as freshmen, sharing a dorm room and rushing sororities together. Then there's Cali Watkins, also an incoming freshman, who's desperate to become a sorority sister but missing a potentially crucial requirement: pedigree.
VERDICT Patton's (Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter) glimpse into Southern sorority life is far more about relationships among women and their support for one another. With a rich story line full of heart, it expertly tackles current social issues. Recommended for Karen White and Mary Alice Monroe fans.
