Beginning with the observation that before Paul Atreides came to power, there were two important women who came before him, this book offers their story, one of contrasts, passion, and danger. At the emperor’s palace, Princess Irulan chafes under her father’s rule but finds new hope in the eyes of a dashing captain who has the audacity to ask for her hand in marriage. The other princess, Chani, comes from the sand people, the Fremen, and is the daughter of the noted planetologist on Liet-Kynes, who sees something unexpected in the desert related to the always intriguing Spacing Guild that has galaxy-spanning implications. Of course, the prince is more than he seems, the powerful are not as powerful as they think, and the desert won’t give up its secrets easily, paving the way for a delightful adventure.
VERDICT This is a worthy new addition to the Dune universe, after The Heir of Caladan, filled with all of the best parts of Dune: the political scheming, the mutant space navigators, and the mystery and menace of the desert.
