The 13th book in Davis’s “Cutter’s Crew” series (after Operation Mountain Recovery) follows the Foxworth Group and their unusually savvy dog Cutter as they investigate the crimes the authorities can’t—or won’t. This time their client is Parker Ward, a man whose status as a whistleblower is having life-altering consequences, as he tries to prove that his friend has indeed witnessed a kidnapping. Local detective Carly Devon steps in to assist and soon finds herself drawn to the man and the mystery in equal measure. Can Parker overcome his personal situation to start a new life with Carly? Will they live long enough to find out?
VERDICT Readers who are already invested in the Cutter’s Crew gang will undoubtedly want to read this installment as well, though it’s not the most engaging novel in the series. The mystery itself is decent, but Parker’s personal issues will likely seem a lot less daunting to the reader than they seem to him.
