Carson’s (Where They Wait) latest follows 16-year-old Marshall Miller as he embarks on a summer that is anything but ordinary. After seeing a missing-person poster, Marshall realizes he must have been the last person to see the girl alive—she was in the back seat of the car when a man impersonating a police officer pulled him over for speeding. Soon, Marshall’s work with a private investigator puts him in the middle of trouble and forever changes his life. Carson incorporates coming-of-age and crime thriller elements into this horror novel, which gets off to a strong start, but as more pieces of the story come together, the plot becomes muddled. The supernatural aspects of the story are also somewhat underdeveloped. Narrator Corey Brill, however, skillfully brings the story to life.
VERDICT Fans of Clive Cussler and Dean Koontz may be intrigued by this mashup of crime thriller, coming-of-age story, and supernatural horror.
