After Emma London’s mother died by suicide when Emma was a child, her worthless father left her with his high society mother, Genevieve. When Emma got pregnant at 17, Genevieve banished her and broke off contact. Eighteen years later, Emma and her teenage daughter, Riley, are contacted by Genevieve, who’s dying of a brain tumor and wants to meet Riley before she goes. Emma reluctantly accepts and brings her daughter to Genevieve’s Connecticut estate for the summer. Riley and Genevieve become close, but Emma keeps her guard up. Each chapter is written from the perspective of different characters, helping readers learn what made these damaged people the way they are. The colorful supporting characters include Genevieve’s housekeeper and only friend, Riley’s father and his new family, attractive single dad Miller, and a pack of unruly dogs.
VERDICT Slowly revealing secrets from the past and adding a mysterious disappearance and people who need love but can’t express it properly, Higgins (Good Luck with That) hits it out of the park with her trademark depth, emotion, and dash of humor. Her fans will love this book, which will attract a wide new readership of family fiction.
