Andersson’s (
Little Red House) latest is a domestic thriller interwoven with a web of secrets and a variety of suspects, set in an isolated New England locale. Beatrice Wicker lives with her wealthy husband, Josh, in Cape Morgan, ME, where she busies herself with renovating a former asylum to turn it into an idyllic artists’ retreat. Her life is upended when an 18-month-old boy goes missing from the local playground. It turns out that the child is Josh’s son with another woman. The hunt for the child brings up ghosts from Beatrice’s own past, as listeners learn that she has changed her identity in hopes of escaping a sinister man who involved her in a deadly plot. Narrator Mia Barron ramps up the tension with excellent pacing that will have listeners on the edge of their seats, not caring about Andersson’s somewhat outlandish plot twists. Barron supplies distinct, satisfying voices for each of the characters, particularly for Beatrice, whose grim intensity rings true.
VERDICT This action-packed thriller offers plenty of surprises. Share with fans of Mary Kubica, Lisa Jewell, and Shari Lapena.
