Luke and Willow Garrison’s marriage has hit a rocky patch—the ER nurse is finding marriage to a Hotshot firefighter to be more stressful than she can handle. Finding out she’s pregnant shortly after asking her husband for a break adds another layer of complication, and when a series of mysterious accidents start happening around Luke, she has to wonder—is he losing it, or is someone actually out to get him? Luke wants to reconcile with his wife, but she might be better off and safer without him. Series readers who are hoping to find out who on the Hotshot squad is sabotaging the team will be disappointed. Though the accomplice of the previous book’s villain is revealed and stopped, someone else is still endangering the squad. The two steps forward, six steps back relationship dance that Willow and Luke engage in makes this a frustrating read, as does the antagonist’s murky motivation.
VERDICT All but diehard devotees of the “Hotshot Heroes” series from Childs (Hotshot Hero Under Fire) will probably want to give this one a pass.
