There’s not much jolly when it comes to Adam Calhoun, the hero of Clare’s latest entry in the “Wyoming Cowboy” series (after The Bachelor Cowboy). In fact, Adam is a downright jerk to Holly Dawson, a struggling waitress at the local café whose dream is to open a bake shop. Readers will be perplexed by Adam’s childish behavior, including verbally needling Holly, leaving her insultingly small tips, sabotaging her chance to win a local cake contest. Adam remains puzzlingly surly when Holly is hired to cook for him at the local ranch where he works; only after he learns of her difficult home life does he begin to soften toward her.
VERDICT Some may find the enemies-to-lovers transformation takes too long, but those who love the idea of winning over an irritable cowboy might appreciate Holly’s efforts to put Adam in his place. Readers looking for a cowboy fix should start with the earlier titles in the “Painted Barrel” series, particularly the Christmas-themed ones.
