Librarian Charlie Harris doesn’t remember Wil Threadgill from high school, but Charlie’s friend and coworker Melba Gilley had a crush on the musician, who left town 40 years ago. Now Melba and Athena College are welcoming Wil back as a successful musician to receive an honorary degree and conduct clinics. Some of Wil’s former bandmates are still angry about his leaving years ago; one of them storms the stage the night of the college reception and is electrocuted when he grabs Wil’s mike. While the police investigate, Charlie questions whether Wil was the actual target or if someone knew the drunken John Earl Whitaker would try to cause a scene. Melba begs Charlie to look into the case. When two of Wil’s band members are attacked and a high school friend dies, Charlie begins to suspect that Wil knows more than he’s telling; he might even be the perpetrator.
VERDICT It’s been two years since What the Cat Dragged In, the last “Cat in the Stacks” mystery. Fans of Charlie and his Maine Coon cat will be delighted to welcome them back in a cozy that combines murder, stories of Charlie’s family, and hints of his upcoming marriage.
