Comedian, writer, actor, and former tech employee Cooper (How To Be Successful Without Hurting Men’s Feelings) rose to fame with hilarious lip-sync videos impersonating Donald Trump. Since then, she has had a whirlwind career, including a Netflix special, acting, and now a memoir to go with her previous books. This memoir is heavily weighted toward her early life, reflecting on her childhood as the oldest child of Jamaican immigrants, but details of her recent whirlwind success are scant. The narrative frequently steers into discussions about recreational drug use, and while occasionally amusing, these sections increasingly wear thin and take away from the impact of her observations. Additionally, the excerpts from the diary she kept as a 13-year-old feel superfluous, offering little insight and coming across as filler. Even so, Cooper’s narration is strong and engaging, a testament to her talent and versatility, proving she’s far more than a lip-sync sensation.
VERDICT Cooper’s strength as a performer makes this audiobook an enjoyable listen. Recommended for libraries where interest in celebrity memoirs is high.
