In the latest from Seabrooke (The Simple Answer), Avery Lindt’s restaurant is failing, and Holly Mason is in danger of being kicked off of the restaurant make-over show she created. In an effort to fix Holly’s public image, bring publicity to Avery’s restaurant, and take down the celebrity chef threatening both of their careers, they reluctantly decide to pretend to be dating, but their mutual attraction almost derails the entire plan. Both leads are bisexual, Avery is trans, and there is a prominent nonbinary character. Seabrooke herself is trans and writes Avery’s romantic storyline without focusing on transitioning, or creating drama rooted in her trans identity.
VERDICT Trans patrons can read this book without worrying about deadnaming, microaggressions related to being trans, or other trauma often associated with trans stories. The book also features some light BDSM, and the behind-the-scenes perspective of creating a reality show as well as the descriptions of food and the vibrant restaurant scene in the fictional Port Andrea will appeal to fans of the Food Network.
