From her battles with her half-sister Mary Tudor to the threat posed by an invasion by the Spanish Armada, Elizabeth I (1533–1603) spent a good measure of her 40-plus years on the throne of England fending off a number of enemies whose common goal was to put an end to her reign. Historians Dan Jones and Suzannah Lipscomb serve as lively narrators for this chronological collection of dramatized episodes from the life and times of the Virgin Queen. Filmed on location, with strong performances from actors portraying each version of Elizabeth (as well as her friends and foes), this thrilling docudrama is an excellent introduction.
VERDICT Fans of the History Channel as well as readers who have devoured the novels of Philippa Gregory and Alison Weir will be equally entertained.
