DEBUT Curses, like nasty weeds, have a stubborn habit of being hard to eradicate even when left defeated on the bloody fields of Har’muth after the Illyriited War. Likewise, monsters, once killed, sometimes refuse to stay dead and buried. Nearly 700 years after the war, even in the midst of a great technological revolution, the descendants of the heroes and the antagonists of this great war are still dealing with the fall-out of the hatred this conflict produced. Even though three brothers gave their physical lives and souls in an attempt to quell the destructive forces of darkness, the land of Lozaria is once again threatened by a cryptic haunting that seems all too alive and well.
VERDICT Newcomer Russell’s new high fantasy series launch is well written with a definite steampunk vibe and sword-and-sorcery appeal. Readers of alternate-world fantasy will find this a satisfying read and a good start for a new author who’s soon to have a loyal following.
