In this delightful series starter, Lynn, who writes the “Lakeside Library Series” as Holly Danvers and the “Handcrafted Mystery” series as Holly Quinn, takes listeners to Maine’s southern coast, where 29-year-old Kinsley Clark is living her dream, running her landscaping business and helping her aunt with her bed and breakfast. The town’s much-anticipated showcase, the Walk Inns, is coming up, and Kinsley must ensure that her clients’ properties and her aunt’s inn look perfect. Everything is going according to plan until Kinsley finds a pink high-heeled shoe in her aunt’s flower bed. Could it be the shoe the police are looking for, connected to the case of the Cinderella Killer? Kinsley enlists the support of her best friend Becca, and together they set out to solve the mystery. The story’s premise, particularly the landscaping aspect, is appealing. Still, listeners may tire of the amateur detectives’ actions, which strain credulity (e.g., trying to get DNA from a beer bottle the suspect was drinking from). Narrator Katie Schorr offers a charming performance, providing easily distinguishable and pleasing character voices.
VERDICT Share with listeners who appreciate engaging characters and a lovely setting but don’t mind over-the-top sleuthing shenanigans.
