Cameron, who has written suspense/action novels based on the Tom Clancy character Jack Ryan, delivers the third in the “Arliss Cutter” series (after Open Carry and Stone Cross), which follows the work of Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Arliss Cutter and his deputy Lola Teariki in Alaska. A Tlingit archaeologist disappears after being sent to the site of a new building project; a woman’s torso washes up near a running path; and Cutter and Teariki are sent to oversee a sequestered jury on a drug case. Chapters are each devoted to one of the characters, giving them space to develop; most often, a new chapter means the perspectives change, while the plot stays on the same timeline. The last half of the book involves the court case. Rumors of a secret informant change the direction of the job, and the author pulls together the various storylines and characters to an exciting climax.
VERDICT Cameron writes with great respect for Indigenous Alaskans and builds suspense steadily in this story. Readers can pick up this installment without having read the other titles in the series. This crime fiction won’t disappoint fans of law enforcement novels and adventures set in the Alaska wilderness.
