Baker Daisy Ellery is back to baking her magically murderous pies, delivered to men who mistreat women, in the second book of Popp’s “Pies Before Guys” series (following
Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies). When Daisy enters an elimination-style baking contest, more than just the bad bakers are eliminated—even the judges are fair game. When someone orders a pie for one of the judges, Daisy is on it—except the judge turns up dead before she can deliver. Now Daisy must compete and solve a murder at the same time. Maybe a little magic will give her the luck she needs. This novel is a delicious listen. Narrator Tanya Eby embodies the buoyant Daisy as she bakes her pies to take out the bad guys, conveying the fun of Popp’s pop-culture-filled mystery. It’s more than just pie and games, however; Popp also tackles current political happenings, especially regarding the rights of women. And when the audiobook reaches its end, there are plenty of recipes for listeners to try.
