Asher, April. Not Your Crush’s Cauldron. St. Martin’s Griffin. (Supernatural Singles, Bk. 3). Feb. 2024. 336p. ISBN 9781250808035. pap. $18. PARANORMAL ROMANCE

Olive Maxwell, witch and predictable professor of supernatural studies, finds her calm life shaken by an unsafe situation with her roommate and needs a new place to crash. Enter Bax Donovan, a tattooed guardian angel who’s been her friend for years but has always kept Olive at arm’s length. Moving in with Bax is her best option, but it presents Olive with the challenge of sharing space with the charming angel whom she’s had a silent crush on for years. When she gives her students an assignment to find ways to step out of their comfort zones, Olive realizes that she might benefit from pushing her own boundaries and compiles a list of ways to break her status quo. Realizing that he is falling for his new roommate is not a problem for Bax, until he’s secretly assigned to be her guardian angel—and it’s against the rules to fall in love with the one he protects. Soon, keeping Olive out of mischief and danger is just as risky as keeping secrets from her. VERDICT The third “Supernatural Singles” book (after Not Your Ex’s Hexes) is an excellent addition to the Maxwell sisters’ fun and steamy shenanigans.—Jenna Harmison

Hawley, Sarah. A Demon’s Guide to Wooing a Witch. Berkley. (Glimmer Falls, Bk. 2). Nov. 2023. 432p. ISBN 9780593547946. pap. $17. PARANORMAL ROMANCE

Hawley shines with her follow-up to A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon. This banter-filled enemies-to-lovers romance features the half-demon Astaroth and badass witch Calladia Cunnington. Banished to the Earth realm by his nemesis after losing a bet, Astaroth finds himself suffering from amnesia. Despite having kicked his butt mere hours before for trying to make a bargain for her best friend’s soul, Calladia gives Astaroth a place to stay for the night. When the demon Moloch tries to do away with Astaroth for good, and Calladia’s house is blown up in the process, the demon and witch take to the road in order to stay under Moloch’s radar and try to find a witch who can help restore Astaroth’s memory. Along the way, the enemies find that they have more in common than they thought. VERDICT Full of witty dialogue and steamy sexual tension, the novel unfolds at a steady pace and draws the reader in. Though this is only her sophomore effort, Hawley is bound to become a staple for readers of paranormal romances. Recommend to fans of Katie MacAlister, Lana Harper, and Molly Harper.—Nanci Milone Hill
