Allan, Gabby. All That Glitters Isn’t Old. Kensington. (Whit and Whiskers Mystery, Bk. 3). Jul. 2023. 304p. ISBN 9781496742056. pap. $16.95. M
This is a delightful destination cozy mystery full of well-crafted twists and turns. Whitney Dagner is reluctantly on the case again in picturesque Catalina. While attending a funeral with her grandmother Goldy, Whitney discovers that the deceased is the mother of Goldy’s former flame, Darren. She learns that their relationship was a ruse to fool his parents who would not have approved of his sexuality. Darren returns for the funeral and to debut his documentary film and the new love of his life, Jericho. The premiere is canceled when Jericho’s dead body is discovered and Darren is the prime suspect. Goldy believes he’s innocent and insists that Whitney and her ragtag “Scooby Gang” investigate to clear Darren’s name. What Whitney unearths is a treasure trove of long-buried family secrets, fraud, smuggled goods, and a whole host of sketchy characters with plenty of motive. VERDICT Whitney may be the amateur sleuth, but Goldy certainly calls the shots in this third book of the series (following Something Fishy This Way Comes). Perfect for cozy fans who enjoy a solid narrative, adventure, and a dash of romance.

Berenson, Laurien. Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble. Kensington. (Senior Sleuths Mystery, Bk. 2). Jul. 2023. 304p. ISBN 9781496735751. $27. M
Berenson’s second “Senior Sleuths Mystery” (following Peg and Rose Solve a Murder) features combative sisters-in-law Peg Turnbull and Rose Donovan back on the case in quaint Connecticut. Determined to get Peg back on the dating scene, Rose makes her an online Mature Mingle profile. Peg meets Nolan through the dating app; however, before their relationship intensifies, Nolan is killed in a hit-and-run that’s deemed a murder. Turns out Nolan was quite the lothario of Mature Mingle and more than one jilted woman would want the con man dead. Peg and Rose set out to investigate by befriending various women from Nolan’s past, other business associates, and his estranged son. As they zero in on the killer, Peg and Rose untangle an impressive web of lies, theft, and a few brushes with death themselves. VERDICT This Golden Girls–style cozy mystery has plenty of humor and style. Readers should expect a slow burn, since the narrative action fails to ignite until midway through the story. Perfect for cozy aficionados looking for a new series and some laughs.
