A Pensive Policier, Pilgrimage, and Lovers on the Lam | Fast Scans

This month’s top indie and foreign films feature a frustrated yet hopeful detective, pilgrims seeking healing at Lourdes, and two Cameroonian youths making their way in a bleak world.

Days of Heaven. 93 min. Criterion. 1978. Blu-ray UPC 715515055710. $39.95. Rated: PG. DRAMA

Posing as siblings, a pair of on-the-lam lovers (Richard Gere and Brooke Adams) from Chicago get work harvesting the golden wheat fields of a terminally ill Texas landowner (Sam Shepard) who finds himself part of a romantic triangle, leading to tragedy. Visionary filmmaker Terrence Malick (Badlands) paints with light in this lyrical, achingly beautiful tale of survival set in an idyllic landscape on the cusp of World War I. The Oscar-winning cinematography benefits from a stunning 4K restoration. VERDICT One of the best films of a seminal era; a must-have.

The Last Picture Show. b/w. 126 min. Criterion. 1971. Blu-ray UPC 715515289412. $49.95. Rated: R. DRAMA

High school seniors and footballers Sonny (Timothy Bottoms) and Duane (Jeff Bridges) pal around in the dying Texas town of Anarene in the early ’50s, trying to impress rich and pretty Jacy (Cybill Shepherd). Sonny finally settles for an affair with his coach’s lonely wife (Cloris Leachman). Meanwhile, the local movie theater’s impending closure by its owner (Ben Johnson) symbolizes the end of an era. Director Peter Bogdanovich captures the milieu in all its chiaroscuro drabness. VERDICT Restored, and including the 1990 sequel Texasville, this is essential.

The Miracle Club. 91 min. Sony. 2023. DVD UPC 043396634763. $23.49; Blu-ray UPC 043396634770. $29.99. Rated: PG-13. DRAMEDY

In late 1960s Ireland, longtime friends Lily (Maggie Smith), Eileen (Kathy Bates), and Dolly (Agnes O'Casey) win a pilgrimage to Lourdes, each seeking a personal cure in the French town’s sacred water. Tagging along is Chrissie (Laura Linney), whose mother intended to take the trip before she died; her presence picks the scabs off old wounds. Veteran TV director Thaddeus O’Sullivan poses an obviously redemptive story filmed in a straightforward style, with the acting transcending the material. VERDICT The cure for viewers in need of uplift.

The Night of the 12th (“La Nuit du 12”). 115 min. In French w/English subtitles. Film Movement. 2022. DVD UPC 850047872111. $29.99. MYSTERY

Dominik Moll’s pensive policier deals with a fresh-faced Grenoble investigator (Bastien Bouillon) on the homicide case (inspired by a real crime) of a young woman burned to death by any one of a number of suspects, each of whom were intimate with the free-spirited victim. Citing the statistics on unresolved murder cases at the outset, this suspenseful and provocative, if emotionally unsatisfying, drama focuses on the frustration of a hopeful detective haunted by the failure to get justice. VERDICT Winner of six César Awards, this atypical genre film demands notice.

Tori and Lokita. 89 min. In French w/English subtitles. Criterion. 2022. DVD UPC 715515290210. $24.99; Blu-ray UPC 715515290111. $29.99. DRAMA

Preteen Tori (Pablo Schils) and 17-year-old Lokita (Joely Mbundu) travel from Cameroon to Belgium where they struggle to survive, singing in a shabby trattoria but mostly selling drugs on behalf of the restaurant’s sleazily exploitative cook. Bonded by fate, the pair look out for each other despite a forced separation. Sibling filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Two Days, One NightThe Unknown Girl) deliver another in a long line of humanist dramas in their signature spare style. VERDICT No-frills filmmaking for patient viewers.
