Recently widowed Baroness Eleanora Coventry must raise her husband’s newly legitimized daughter Amelia and her own sullen son Edward, so she moves them to the countryside to avoid London gossip. Nurturing two traumatized children, Nora feels overwhelmed and is terrified that Edward will be removed from her custody, as her late husband’s will gave control of their son’s upbringing to a solicitor. When she seeks riding lessons for her children, she meets stablemaster Ridley Ellis, who has a way with horses and a genteel, patient manner. Ridley manages to gain the trust and respect of Nora and her children, both of whom become more at peace thanks to Ridley’s generosity. Nora begins to risk propriety to get closer to Ridley, while Ridley wonders if his love and long-held secret will be safe with Nora, before high society tears them apart.
