DEBUT NOVEL Eddie Sabella is a New York newspaper columnist who is always looking for the next story. One day, a story idea starts with the weeping statue of St. Joseph at a local Catholic church. Eddie interviews Father Keller, a colorful character who tells him the statue was donated by a restaurateur, Nick Arena. Nick was once affiliated with the mob, but Eddie is surprised to learn that Nick is also the father of Filomena, aka Phyllis Blake, the woman Eddie loved who disappeared 15 years ago. When the statue is stolen, Eddie circles back and uses his shrewd investigative skills to put together all the clues leading to a story of rivalry between two men that results in the theft of a Sicilian statue from a church.
VERDICT With its short, brisk chapters, the novel reads as if it were a newspaper column, appropriate for the investigative nature of the book. While there is little suspense, readers who enjoy colorful characters might appreciate this fiction debut by a sports and entertainment journalist who writes what he knows.
