It's the 1930s. Saba is an avenger striving to free Palestine for her Arab people. Black wings tattooed on her cheek remind her that her countrymen and—women—are exiles in their own land. Eddie is a petroleum engineer: the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma destroyed his family's farm, and now he's in the Middle East, developing a revolutionary high-octane gasoline for use in fighter planes. In America, people starve while banks take their farms. In Europe, Hitler contemplates a final solution to his Jewish problem. America's magnates sit on the fence: whom will they support in the pending conflict? The Middle East is the battleground in the fight for oil as Saba and Eddie become lovers.
VERDICT Newton's (Calumet City; Start Shooting) third thriller is clumsily written but exciting.
